Welcome!I am Dr. Tom Fish, chair of the Department of English and Modern Foreign Language. On behalf of all of the English faculty at Cumberland College, let me invite you to become more acquainted with Cumberland College and especially with the English Department by exploring this website. Departmental MissionThis website illustrates our department's commitment to pursuing the traditions of the liberal arts in a modern world. In our freshman composition courses, we seek not only to foster the communication skills necessary for success in collegiate life and beyond, but also to foster the self-awareness and understanding that is the foundation of critical thinking. In our general education courses in literature, we seek to a nurture a literacy in elements of the cultural heritage that have contributed to the shape of our present and may provide some keys to our future. The three tracks of the English major -- in literary studies, in teacher certification, and in writing -- only further affirm our desire both to nurture the personal professional goals of our students and to serve the needs of modern society. Website Design and CompositionThis website is literally the product of the English Department's mission, for these pages were designed and most of them were composed by students in ENGL 231 pursuing the writing track of the English major in the spring of 2004. Thank you Tiffany Carby, KellyHutchens,Josh Keezer, and Mandy Webb for your efforts here, and also for the future community service and leadership that these efforts foreshadow.
