Welcome to the resource center for ENGL 231, Writing with the New Media. This course is an essential part of the "writing track" of the major curriculum recently restructured by the Department of English of University of the Cumberlands. This version of the English major is intended to provide varied and practical writing experience for those not intending to become teachers or to pursue a traditional post-graduate education in English.
Students in this course will have an opportunity to develop some technical expertise in developing hypertext projects for the Internet and in preparing multimedia presentations. They will also discover and explore the new rhetorical strategies necessary for effective communication in these "new media" venues. But in addition to providing an avenue for professional development of their communication skills, this course also is the reflection of an important focus of my own professional development over the past 15 years. Although I continue to be an active scholar-teacher of the 19th-century British literature that was focus of my graduate studies, writing with the new media has become a passion for me.
