 Degree Requirements

Objectives of the Department of English

  1. To familiarize students with a broad range of English and American writers, works, and concepts of literary history.
  2. To nurture in students an awareness and appreciation of the many factors influencing the development of specific writers.
  3. To enhance reading and writing skills of students, particularly as scholars of literature.
  4. To further the students’ self-understanding and cultural awareness by exploring their appreciation of literature.
  5. To coordinate history, philosophy, the fine arts and religion with the study of literature.
  6. To prepare those students with special interests and aptitudes for their future educational or vocational needs.

Literature Track: Bachelor of Science with a Major in English

42 semester hours as follows:

ENGL 230 Literary Criticis
ENG 439 Descriptive Linguistics

Four of the following courses:

ENGL 331 English Literature through 1660
ENGL 332 English Literature 1660-1830
ENGL 333 English Literature since 1830
ENGL 334 American Literature through 1865
ENGL 335 American Literature since 1865

Three of the following courses:

ENGL 431 Romantic Literature
ENGL 432 Victorian Literature
ENGL 433 Women in Literature
ENGL 437 Studies in British and American Authors

Three electives:

Any additional 300- or 400-level courses (NOT including 336, 337, or 338)

Two courses in either Spanish or French

(For B.A. an additional 2 courses is required in either Spanish or French)

Teaching Track: Bachelor of Science with a Major in English for Secondary Certification

42 semester hours to include the requirements for the B.S. plus:

ENGL 230 Literary Criticism
E NGL 438 Advanced Writing
ENGL 439 Descriptive Linguistics

Four of the following courses:

ENGL 331 English Literature through 1660
ENGL 332 English Literature 1660-1830
ENGL 333 English Literature since 1830
ENGL 334 American Literature through 1865

Three of the following courses:

ENGL 431 Romantic Literature

ENGL 437 Studies in British and American Authors
